Switzerland is the best example of a successful confederation, the successful operation of direct democracy, and the successful opposition to the expansion of state functions. However, even Switzerland is still not minarchism. Taxes instead of voluntary contributions, the existence of a central bank, and state economic and non-economic regulations are all beyond the minarchist ideal.

Nevertheless, Switzerland is an excellent benchmark for virtually any modern society desiring more freedom and less state.
